- Allied General
The original Panzer General 3D broke all the rules for turn-based hex games. Great graphics, full 30 views and above all, no hexes. Set on the Western Front, it put you in control of either the Allies or the Axis, in battles ranging from Africa to a hypothetical German invasion of Washington. Game Details: Welcome to the “Panzer General 2” for Mac game page. This page contains information + tools how to port Panzer General 2 in a few simple steps (that even a noob can understand) so you can play it on your Mac using Crossover.Crossover makes it possible to play Windows on your Mac with just a few clicks!

Description of Allied General
First sequel to SSI's breakthrough wargame Panzer General, Allied General is essentially the same game set in a different theatre in World War II, with some slight improvements and Windows 95 engine that makes the game much slower than its predecessor.
As opposed to the first game's emphasis on the Germans' operations, Allied General covers the Allied campaigns in the World War II European Theater of Operations, as well as North Africa. Gameplay is essentially unchanged from Panzer General, except that you can now command a wider range of units, and certain features of the engine have been tweaked to make for a more realistic game. The Allied's anti-aircraft guns, ships, and anti-tank units, for instance, are much more powerful than their counterparts in Panzer General (or at least that's my impression). This means that, as Allied, you now stand a chance against the Germans' formidable Panzer tanks. The scenarios and campaigns are all well thought-out and follow a logical progression, although anyone who wants to try to change history will be disappointed: you can only relive it in this game.
Overall, Allied General is a solid sequel that is more evolutionary than revolutionary. As with most sequels, SSI decided to stick with the safe 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' philosophy. As a result, Allied General just does not feature any revolutionary ideas to surpass its predecessor in terms of panache and originality. Given how original and playable Panzer General is, however, that is not necessarily a bad thing. It is unfortunate that SSI decided to port the game to Windows 95 platform, because it runs much slower, and the interface is much more cumbersome, than the DOS-based engine of Panzer General. Crisper graphics and better sound effects make up for this weakness, though. Also, the speed problem isn't really a problem anymore for today's Pentium computers :) Thumbs up!

Hey guys! I just heard about something called 'Panzer General Forever'. It allows for both PG and AG (Allied General) campaigns to be played on modern versions of Windows, to solve compatibility issues.
The only problem with this version seems to be that the AI was modified according to 'personal tastes', but from what I've heard you can change in the options and revert the AI back to 'Classic Mode' or something like that. Greatly appreciated!

The graphics in my version of the game don't look as nice as the examples on this pages. Unseen hexes in my game are now a muddy blackish color. When I played the game a couple years ago on a different computer unseen hexes looked like the screen examples on this page. Is there a problem with wing32.dll and is there a version of wing32.dll that has this fixed?

It works using a small tool called DxWnd, you have to enable 'Expert Mode' at the main menu and look for the options 'Suppress Overlay Capability', 'Minimal Caps' (check all four options in that section there) and at the Compat tab check the option 'Limited Resources' on the left. I'm still looking for a way to make the window zoomed-up and therefore making the text bigger on screen without manually resizing my desktop.

To run Allied General on Windows 7 or similar you'll probably have to download the WING32.dll file from the internet. Place copies of this file in C:Windows/System AND the C:Windows/SysWOW64 file folders (If you have both)
Run AG in Compatability Mode for Windows XP and at 256 Colors.

Think this was the best WWII game ever! It had just the right balance between play complexity and simplicity! It was also a bit challenging. Also, it was great to learn about the many different battles and campaigns of WWII. Allied General had many campaign scenarios: North Africa, France, Russia, Germany and my odd favorite Russo-Finish war! I think there was even a Norway scenario.
It would have been great to have this game evolve. As I said before it had a terrific play balance. Many other strategic turn based games are too complex. This game moved along at very nice pace too.
